No-Shave November has been a long standing popular tradition among men who use the month as an opportunity to grow out their facial hair that they otherwise may not for many reasons. Reasons like, work, significant others, looks, or just flat out because they are bad at growing facial hair.
Since 2003, there has been an organization known as the Movember Foundation, and they take part in the no-shave fun in their own way— by growing out their mustaches. Their goal? Raise awareness for men's health and issues that go unnoticed by so many. Since the organization's introduction, over $650 million has been raised to make men more aware of illnesses that may run in their family such as prostate cancer.
One of my good friends, Brandon, has health issues that run in his family, so he decided to help raise awareness about men's health this month by participating in the increasingly popular Movember trend. When I asked him about the cause, and how he was helping, he told me this.
"When people see a mustache on someone that is normally clean shaven, it's a shock to them. Everyone I ran into asked about it the first time they saw it. It was a good opportunity to talk to them about men's health and the role that your heritage plays. Also, it was a good reminder to me that I need to get to my doctor soon."
I never would have guessed that something that is viewed as so silly and fun could make a difference in early detection for health problems.
With today being the first of December, it meant that Brandon and many others got to shave off their 'staches that were driving them mad. I forced my hand and made sure that I was there as he spent his last few minutes with it and as he had to work to shave it off. It had grown so thick that his trimmer couldn't even get it easily. After a few lumberjack techniques, he finally got the hair off and is back to a clean shaven look. I asked him how he felt with it gone, and his only reply was "relieved."
I would like to give a big THANK YOU to Brandon! He was such a trooper (he loves being photographed, can't you tell?!). One of the things I love about Brandon is he's always up for my crazy ideas!
